This kind of trauma doesn’t simply disappear with time. As a child grows into an adult, the pain and confusion caused by those early experiences will continue to shape the person’s beliefs and behaviours, which can and often lead to poor or self-destructive behaviours or lifestyle choices that can prevent the person from reaching their full potential.
Traumatic experiences—such as neglect, abuse, or witnessing violence—can lead a child to internalize harmful beliefs like:
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “I don’t deserve love.”
- “It’s my fault.”
- “I deserve to be punished.”
- “The world is dangerous, and I must always be on guard.”
These beliefs, formed during a time of immense vulnerability, continue into adulthood, affecting relationships, self-esteem, and emotional well-being. The inner child—the part of us that holds onto these childhood emotions and experiences—often carries the weight of these wounds, influencing how we view ourselves and interact with the world.

Understanding the Inner Child
The inner child is the part of you that formed during your early years, up until the age of seven. It holds all of your childhood experiences—both joyful and painful. If trauma occurs during these formative years, the inner child can feel abandoned, unsafe, or unworthy. This fragmentation can manifest in adulthood as difficulty trusting others, fear of intimacy, or a constant sense of unease.
Healing the inner child involves revisiting those wounded parts of yourself with compassion, acknowledging their pain, and providing the love and care they didn’t receive at the time.
